“Fairy Tailed: A Moving Postcard” is a shadow play based on some typical fairy tale characters. To create this, we put together a small forest set and lit it from behind. We set the camera up and then ran through each scene a couple of times. In editing, we combined the silhouette play with some shots of the characters’ shadows on a wall. We came up for some ideas for the music and then Michael laid them down after watching the film and playing along with it a few times.

We were inspired to make this after going to the Volkspark Friedrichshain here in Berlin, where we saw some statues of various characters from the Grimm brothers stories. We made this as a birthday gift for Michael’s mother, because she likes fairy tales. This is certainly a departure from our normal nonfiction and documentary work, but it sure was fun doing it!
